Health Trek - Nutrition and Media Literacy Outreach Education Program
Health Trek is an interactive health education program that teaches middle school youth to take charge of their health. Health Trek is a nutrition and media literacy program for middle school youth in Washington State. The program components include curriculum and training workshops for teachers, hands-on traveling exhibits, and an interactive web site. The goal of Health Trek is to improve the health of young people by increasing knowledge on food science, media literacy, and healthy food choices.
Health Trek is available at no charge to middle schools in Washington State and consists of 3 components:
CurriculumThe Health Trek program consists of a hands-on, interactive curriculum designed to engage students, encourage healthy decision-making, and increase awareness of personal health choices. Health Trek staff conduct regional curriculum training workshops for students and teachers throughout the state. All teachers attending the workshop receive a copy of the curriculum and a kit containing all the materials needed to teach the lessons.
Health Trek - Nutrition and Media Literacy School Visits
Interactive Exhibits
Health Trek staff deliver the interactive, hands-on exhibits to partner schools that have attended the curriculum training workshops and implemented the lessons into their classrooms.
Media Literacy Curriculum and PSA Studio
Health Trek staff bring a traveling Public Service Announcement Studio and work with students in each school to create video and print public service announcements (PSA's) focused on increasing physical activity and encouraging healthy eating habits.
Health Trek is a program of the Group Health Community Foundation and Group Health Cooperative. Health Trek Nutrition and Media Literacy has been funded by an antitrust settlement achieved by the Attorney General of Washington on behalf of vitamin consumers. The program is implemented in middle schools throughout the state of Washington.

The Health Trek website has many resources targeted to both students and teachers. By using elements like interactive games and group discussions, HealthTrek.org supplements the classroom experience of the curriculum to further the power of the Health Trek experience.
